Location: Gayle Karch Cook Center for Public Arts and Humanities (Maxwell Hall), Grand Hall

Writing Queer History (Bloomsbury, 2026).

Writing Queer History

Join us for a Meet the Author talk with Matt Cook, Jonathan Cooper Professor of the History of Sexuality at the University of Oxford. Cook, with Sarah Knott (also now at the University of Oxford) and Colin Johnson (American Studies and Gender Studies at IU Bloomington), will discuss his new book, Writing Queer History (Bloomsbury, 2026), as well as his recent co-edited book, A Queer Scrapbook: Britain and Ireland since 1945 (Manchester University Press, 2026). A reception will follow.

Matt Cook is the inaugural Jonathan Cooper Professor of the History of Sexuality at the University of Oxford, and Co-Director (with Sarah Knott) of the Centre for Women’s, Gender and Queer History. He specializes in modern and contemporary queer, British, urban and public history, and has published widely, with books including London and the Culture of Homosexuality (2003), Queer Domesticities (2014), Queer Beyond London (2022) and Writing Queer History (2026). He is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, an editor of History Workshop Journal, and has advised on a wide range of community, museum, archive and heritage sector projects, nationally and internationally. Before joining Oxford’s History Faculty in 2023, he was Professor of Modern History at Birkbeck, University of London, where he co-directed the Raphael Samuel History Centre.

This event is co-sponsored by the College Arts + Humanities Institute, the Kinsey Institute, and the University of Oxford’s Centre for Women’s, Gender and Queer Histories. For more information, or if you have an accommodation request, please email cahi@iu.edu or call 812-856-1169.
