Making a King: The Political Theology of Joan of Arc (Columbia, 2026).

Making a King: The Political Theology of Joan of Arc

The College Arts + Humanities Institute and the Center for Religion & The Human present a Meet the Author talk with Winnifred Sullivan (emeritus, Religious Studies) in conversation with Spencer Dew (Ohio State University) about Sullivan’s recent book, Making a King: The Political Theology of Joan of Arc (Columbia, 2026). Please join us for a reception following the discussion.

Winni Sullivan, who has written extensively about the contradictions and paradoxes of religious freedom law in the US, has written a new book about Joan of Arc. Growing out of her teaching at IU and elsewhere, Sullivan presents a young woman of intelligence and courage who thought the religion and politics of her time differently, offering a model, perhaps, of vernacular political theology, a politics of peace free of aristocratic absolutism and greed. Sullivan will be in conversation with Spencer Dew of Ohio State University, author of The Aliites (Chicago, 2019) a scholar of popular sovereignties in the US and elsewhere. Sullivan and Dew have been colleagues in a working group at the CRH, “Unstating Religion,” funded by the Luce Foundation.

This event is made possible with support from the College of Arts + Sciences and the Ruth N. Halls Humanities Fund.
