Grants may be awarded up to $5,000 ($2,500 from CAHI with a match from ASURE).
Awardees will work with their students over the course of the semester to develop, curate, and install an exhibition in a gallery at McCalla/University Collections before the start of the exam period that semester. Exhibitions can include historical artifacts, ephemera, posters, objects, books, documents, photographs, artworks, and more. McCalla staff can help with the final installation, but all curatorial decisions and work must be done by the faculty member and their students.
Grant funds may be used to pay for:
- Permissions
- Printing
- Framing
- Materials and equipment
- Wall text
- Installation labor beyond what McCalla can provide
Application Requirements:
- Proposed course title and semester to be taught
- Draft syllabus, including course description and learning outcomes
- A 1-2 page description of the proposed curatorial project/exhibition, including an explanation of how the curatorial project will enhance the course’s learning outcomes. The proposal should indicate if the exhibition will use materials from IU collections, and if the faculty member has consulted with archivists and/or librarians at those collections; describe the intended mediums; indicate if student-produced works will be included; and describe any permissions that will be required to display works.
- Curriculum vitae (only relevant portions; five pages at most)
- Detailed budget itemizing all anticipated costs associated with mounting the exhibition
- Chair’s completion of the “Chair’s approval form,” including a letter of support from the department Chair
CAHI staff and leadership are willing to consult with interested faculty in advance of the grant submission deadline.
Eligibility + usage:
Who may apply: Non-tenure-track and tenure-track core College faculty members in the arts and humanities at Indiana University Bloomington.
Grant expenditures must adhere strictly to those listed on the budget proposal, and any changes to the budget must be approved by CAHI.
If other internal or external funding is received for the same project, CAHI requires notification, and reserves the right to adjust or reassign awards in light of this information.
Upon completion of an award:
CAHI requires that all grant and fellowship recipients send a brief description of the scholarly/artistic activities accomplished as a result of the CAHI award by the end of the semester following the award period. All grant recipients are kindly requested to acknowledge the support of the College Arts and Humanities Institute in any flyers, posters, publications or publicity.
