Humanities Without Walls (HWW) is a consortium of humanities centers and institutes at 16 major research universities throughout the Midwest and beyond. Based at the Humanities Research Institute at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), HWW has been funded by three successive grants from the Mellon Foundation.
Humanities Without Walls
Grand Research Challenge
Each year, HWW holds a Grand Research Challenge competition for large-scale grants. The consortium invites applications from cross-institutional teams including scholars from at least two member institutions pursuing research projects around major questions that require humanities- and arts-based collaborative approaches. The 2020-2022 round of competitions requires applicants to demonstrate a commitment to methodologies of reciprocity and redistribution.
Through modes of research partnership that are reciprocal and redistributive, collaborators will demonstrate that “humanities without walls” is not only a metaphor but also a strategic commitment to imagining and doing academic work more inclusively—with universal access, social equity and racial diversity always front of mind.
The deadline for the second round of proposals is November 15, 2022.
IU applicants should contact CAHI’s director no later than no later than October 1, 2022, with an email indicating intent to apply to HWW. Applicants will also need to work with IU’s Office of Research Administration prior to applying.
Predoctoral Career Diversity Summer Workshop
In summer 2023, the University of Minnesota’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences will host HWW’s annual Career Diversity Summer Workshop for doctoral students in the humanities and humanistic social sciences. Minneapolis, Minnesota will serve as the primary location for workshop activities.
Through a series of workshops, talks, and site visits, participants will learn how to imagine possible futures and leverage their skills and humanities training towards careers in the private sector, the nonprofit world, arts administration, public media, and many other fields.
