CAHI will generally not give awards retroactively for travel that has already taken place. For cases in which timing is misaligned, we recommend writing to cahi@iu.edu and submitting a conditional application by the deadline. It is easy to withdraw the application should you end up not traveling.
International travel by individual graduate students no longer requires case-by-case COVID mitigation review by the OVPIA exception committee. Instead, individual graduate student travelers are required to submit an international travel form. The form should be e-mailed directly to OVPIA at ovpia@iu.edu prior to travel, and should also be filed in the student’s home department records. More information can be found here.
All awards are subject to university restrictions and regulations.
Please note CAHI's graduate award payment guidelines have changed: As of January 1, 2023, and in keeping with how faculty grants are distributed, graduate awards will be handled via reimbursement after travel is completed. Award recipients will need to submit itemized receipts showing method of payment for expenses related to the CAHI grant (up to the award amount), although per diem food receipts are not required. Recipients will also need to meet with CAHI Operations Assistant Shaina Sanders to process reimbursement requests. Expenditures must follow IU Travel Management policies.
Applications should include the following materials:
- 1-page cover letter outlining the research to be done and the necessity of the travel
- Curriculum vitae
- Brief abstract of the dissertation or thesis project (no more than 200 words)
- Budget outlining expected costs
- Letter of support from a faculty advisor, outlining the student’s progress toward the degree and the significance of the research trip in relation to the student’s work
Eligibility:
Who may apply: IU Ph.D. or M.F.A. students in the arts and humanities. Students must be enrolled in the College of Arts + Sciences at Indiana University Bloomington in order to apply for and receive award funding.
Applicants need to have completed all coursework, been advanced to candidacy, and be at work on the dissertation. M.F.A. applicants must be within one year of completing their thesis work.
M.Arch applicants must have successfully completed their third semester of course work signaling the end of the Core Curriculum. Those students must be beginning work on a faculty approved independent study and/or a final or capstone project in the last three semesters of the program.
If other internal or external funding is received for the same project, CAHI requires notification, and reserves the right to adjust or reassign awards in light of this information. Awards cannot be given retroactively for travel occurring before the date of award notification.
